Sub-Abilities

The sub-ability system in Bizarre Lineage lets every player choose one of 4 secondary combat paths: Hamon (The Ripple), Vampire, Cyborg, or Human. Each sub-ability grants unique passive bonuses, exclusive moves, and a distinctive evasion animation that changes your dodge visual effect. Once learned from a trainer NPC, your sub-ability is permanent and cannot be switched on that character.

Sub-abilities work with any Stand in the game, meaning you can pair Vampire with Star Platinum, Hamon with The World, or Cyborg with King Crimson — the choice is yours. Your sub-ability selection significantly impacts your combat effectiveness, survivability, and playstyle in both PvP and PvE content.

Each sub-ability also provides a unique evasion animation: Hamon users dodge with a golden flash, Cyborg users dodge with a purple mechanical effect, and Vampire users dodge with a red blood-mist animation. These visual effects are cosmetic but instantly tell opponents what sub-ability you are running.

Hamon (The Ripple): Grants +0.02 HP regeneration passively and boosts M1 (basic attack) damage. Hamon is the hard counter to Vampire users, dealing bonus damage against them. Learned from Ancient Ghost at Bus Stop 5. Best for aggressive Stand builds that rely on M1 combos.

Vampire: Provides lifesteal on every attack, healing +0.02 HP on normal hits and +0.04 HP on heavy attacks. Vampire is the strongest sub-ability overall for sustain, but has a critical weakness — Hamon users deal increased damage to Vampires. Obtained via Stone Mask item.

Cyborg: Grants a flat 15% damage reduction on all incoming attacks and adds ranged attack options. Cyborg is the tankiest sub-ability and excels in PvE content where sustained defense matters. Learned from Stroheim NPC.

Human: The default sub-ability with no trainer required. Provides a slight passive HP regeneration but no unique moves or combat bonuses. Human is generally considered the weakest option and most players switch to one of the other three as soon as possible.

Hamon Builds: Hamon pairs exceptionally well with Stands that rely on M1 combos and close-range pressure. Top Hamon Stands include Star Platinum (M1 rush synergy), Whitesnake (combo extensions), Stone Free (string combos), Anubis (Weapon stat + M1 buff), and Weather Report (aggressive melee playstyle). Hamon + Boxing is the most popular combo in the game due to the double M1 damage buff.

Vampire Builds: Vampire excels with Stands that deal frequent hits, maximizing lifesteal value. Best Vampire Stands are The World (high burst + sustain), Made in Heaven (speed + constant hits), King Crimson (aggressive trading), Killer Queen (chip damage sustain), and The World High Voltage (extreme burst healing). Vampire + Kendo is a strong general-purpose pairing.

Cyborg Builds: Cyborg works best with Stands that benefit from tankiness and ranged options. Recommended Cyborg Stands include Crazy Diamond (defensive + healing synergy), Golden Experience (sustain stacking), and Purple Haze (survive your own poison with damage reduction). Cyborg is the safest choice for PvE-focused players running raids.
